Cooking grains and cereals
Rolled oats
2 cups of water for every cup of oats.
- Combine the oats and water in a pot.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce to medium heat, let cook for 15 minutes.
Steel-cut oats
3 1/2 to 4 cups water for every cup of oats.
- Combine the oats and water in a pot.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce to medium heat, let cook for 20 minutes while stirring from time to time.
- After that time keep it simmering for an extra 5 to 10 minutes depending on desired consistency.
White rice
2 cups water for every cup of rice.
- Combine water and rice in a pot (it’s nice but optional to add some margarine or seasonings at that step).
- Bring to a boil, cover and reduce the heat. Simmer for 7 minutes.
- Remove the pot from the heat remove the lid and fluff with a fork.
Quinoa
1 3/4 cups water for every cup of quinoa.
- Combine the quinoa and water in a medium pot.
- Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce the heat. Simmer for 15 minutes.
- Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit, covered, for 10 minutes more.
- Then, remove the lid and fluff with a fork.
