Cooking grains and cereals

Rolled oats

2 cups of water for every cup of oats.

  1. Combine the oats and water in a pot.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce to medium heat, let cook for 15 minutes.

Steel-cut oats

3 1/2 to 4 cups water for every cup of oats.

  1. Combine the oats and water in a pot.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce to medium heat, let cook for 20 minutes while stirring from time to time.
  3. After that time keep it simmering for an extra 5 to 10 minutes depending on desired consistency.

White rice

2 cups water for every cup of rice.

  1. Combine water and rice in a pot (it’s nice but optional to add some margarine or seasonings at that step).
  2. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce the heat. Simmer for 7 minutes.
  3. Remove the pot from the heat remove the lid and fluff with a fork.

Quinoa

1 3/4 cups water for every cup of quinoa.

  1. Combine the quinoa and water in a medium pot.
  2. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce the heat. Simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit, covered, for 10 minutes more.
  4. Then, remove the lid and fluff with a fork.
